Pelmo Books is a Pretoria-based publishing house that was established in 2007 when Nkemi Molefe, the founder, decided to publish her father’s work. Her father, Lawrence Molefe, was already a published author with many books written in isizulu under his belt.
With Pelmo Books, Molefe is interested in new stories from young people with a fresh perspective. They also publish established authors and in South Africa’s multiple languages. Including titles such as Awu! Bengithi Ngiyazi by JI Mtsweni, Ekufeni Kuyaphilwa by KP Kabini, Death By Dessert by Thys Hattingh and Kwaqhuma Nhlamvana by L Molefe.
We want the children to learn these languages from a young age so they don’t fade and so they can relate to their culture.
In 2015, Pelmo Books joined in the celebration of 150 years Alice in Wonderland by publishing an isiZulu translation U-Alice Ezweni Lezimanga by DBZ Ntuli.
To celebrate National Book Week, we will spotlight five South African independent publishers whose books we think you should definitely buy, read and share with all your friends. Follow @NBW_SA on twitter.
